Rider Biomechanics
Rider Biomechanics
Understand your body. Improve your riding. Enhance your horse’s way of going.
Rider biomechanics is about more than correcting your position. It’s about understanding how your body works, how you move and how this influence your horse.
Have you ever been told to sit straighter, relax your shoulders, use your core, stop moving one hand or keep your lower leg still, only to find yourself slipping back into the same habits a few strides later?
There is often more going on than simply needing to correct your position.
Our bodies are constantly adapting, while developing movement patterns, habits and asymmetries that can influence our balance, stability, mobility and coordination. These, in turn, affect how we sit, move and communicate with our horses.
By looking more deeply into how your body functions, rider biomechanics can help you understand not only what you are doing, but why — and how to make meaningful changes.
More than position correction
My approach to rider biomechanics considers the whole rider.
Drawing on my experience as a BHSI Performance Coach, RWYM Rider Biomechanics Coach and qualified Hatha Yoga teacher, I look at how your body works as an integrated system.
We explore how your posture, movement, muscles and fascia, balance and coordination influence your horse, while developing greater awareness of the habits and patterns that may be limiting your effectiveness.
Through individual assessment, practical coaching and carefully selected off-horse exercises, we work towards changes that you can understand, feel and apply in your riding.
How can rider biomechanics help you?
Your training doesn’t stop when you leave the saddle
Off-horse exercises can be an invaluable part of rider development. They allow us to explore movement, balance, mobility, strength and coordination without the added demands of riding.
By developing these qualities away from the horse, you can build a better understanding of your own body and work towards applying that awareness in the saddle.
Every rider has more to discover
Whether you enjoy hacking, dressage, show jumping, eventing or simply want to develop a better partnership with your horse, rider biomechanics can offer valuable insights and help improve your horse’s way of going and performance.
You don’t have to be struggling with a particular problem to benefit. Even experienced riders can develop habitual patterns over time that go unnoticed but influence their effectiveness.
With over 20 years of experience in rider biomechanics, I continue to be fascinated by how small changes in the rider can make a meaningful difference to the horse-and-rider partnership.
When we understand our own bodies better, we have the opportunity to change the conversation with our horses.
